The AASM Foundation Sleep Champion Award celebrates the sleep health services and education provided by non-profit organizations. To be selected for the Sleep Champion Award, a non-profit organization must show a strong passion for healthy sleep and be nominated by an AASM member.

This year, the Hypersomnia Foundation was selected for the Sleep Champion Award in support of their commitment to improving the lives of people living with Idiopathic Hypersomnia and related sleep disorders.

While the Hypersomnia Foundation explores the science and impacts of several sleep disorders, their main focus is on Idiopathic Hypersomnia (IH). IH is a chronic neurological sleep disorder that causes extreme daytime sleepiness and severely impacts one’s quality of life. Often, those suffering from IH do not receive a correct diagnosis for extended periods of time, leaving them increasingly vulnerable to poor sleep health.

The Hypersomnia Foundation wishes to end this vicious cycle. Founded in 2014, the Hypersomnia Foundation was created by people struggling with IH, for people affected by IH. With core values of passion, validation, equity, partnering, trust, and dedication, the Hypersomnia Foundation has been, and will continue to be a strong leader in the mission to shed light on and find a cure for hypersomnia.

As a provider of patient resources, educator of sleep disorders, and advocate for sleep research studies, the Hypersomnia Foundation was the perfect recipient for our 2022 Sleep Champion Award. The AASM Foundation wholeheartedly supports the Hypersomnia Foundation’s vision to fulfill the dream of restorative nighttime sleep and wide-awake days.
