How Your Donation Helps
For the millions of people who suffer from a sleep disorder, a new day is rarely a fresh start. Instead, each day brings with it the baggage from the night before: problems such as excessive sleepiness, frustration, confusion and anxiety. Over time the effects of an untreated sleep disorder can grow in severity. Sleep disorders have been linked to other health problems such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and depression. Yet there is hope for people who suffer from a sleep disorder.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine Foundation award programs fund strategic research projects by leading sleep scientists. These studies explore the nature of sleep and sleep-related problems. The discoveries that result lay the groundwork for improvements in medical care for people who have a sleep disorder. Because of sleep research, safe and effective treatments are available today for many sleep disorders, including insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome.
The AASM Foundation also supports the education and training of sleep scientists and sleep medicine specialists. AASM Foundation awards help support the entry of young physicians and scientists into sleep research and academic sleep medicine. The need for advances in sleep medicine, research and education has never been greater. Donate today!
