The American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation has announced a four-year partnership with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Foundation (AASMF). This collaboration will build upon ongoing collaborations between the organizations with an investment in Sleep Medicine Physicians of Tomorrow scholarships to support medical students with an interest in sleep medicine and related research.
Both organizations aim to enhance medical education through innovative programming focused on mentorship and professional development. The scholarship, going into its 4th year, alleviates tuition costs, allowing students to dedicate more time to their academic work. This multi-year commitment directly aligns with AASMF’s new strategic direction to further invest in sleep medicine career development and education.
“Our scholarship with the AMA Foundation demonstrates both our organizations’ commitment to supporting aspiring physicians and the future of sleep medicine,” said R. Nisha Aurora, MD, MHS, President of the AASM Foundation. “We are eager to support medical students who not only embody the AASM Foundation’s purpose and values but are also already excited about providing sleep care and advancing sleep science.”
The AASM Foundation has generously underwritten AMA Foundation scholarships since 2021, totaling $100,000 in aid. The 2024 recipients include:
- Alexander Batterman, Cooper Medical School of Rowan University
- Samantha Shave, Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School
- Benjamin Wipper, Harvard Medical School
- Peter Zaki, Drexel University College of Medicine
Shave expressed her gratitude, stating, “I am a first-generation student, and this scholarship is significant. Dedication to supporting medical students continues to significantly impact the future of medicine and physicians of tomorrow.”
Applications for the 2025 Sleep Medicine Physicians of Tomorrow scholarship are now open, and the inaugural cohort of recipients will be announced in the spring of next year. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and maintain academic excellence. More information and application details can be found on the AMA Foundation website.
