The AASM Foundation believes in the importance of growing the number of clinical sleep scientists across several diverse sleep research areas. This fall, the AASM Foundation and Research Career Development Committee hosted the second webinar of the Sleep Research Career Pathways: A Panel Discussion series. The goal of the series is to further expose early and mid-career sleep researchers to the different career paths that can be pursued, though the webinars are open to anyone.

The fall webinar, facilitated by Logan Schneider, MD, showcased the different career pathways of the following sleep researchers, who presented their perspectives on working and volunteering at nonprofit organizations focused on improving and increasing sleep health awareness.

  • Lu Dong, PhD – RAND Corporation
  • Lauren Hale, PhD – National Sleep Foundation
  • Karin Johnson, MD, FAAN, FAASM – Save Standard Time
  • Terra Ziporyn, PhD – Start School Later

Each panelist provided insight into their specific role in a nonprofit, shared how they decided to work or volunteer at their current nonprofit, discussed opportunities to work on different initiatives at a nonprofit, and conveyed how this work is fulfilling and creates an impact on sleep health for all.
