The AASM Foundation and Hypersomnia Foundation are excited to announce the 2026 recipient of a Strategic Research Grant focused on advancing the diagnosis and treatment of central disorders of hypersomnolence. Together, the organizations have granted over $1 million in support of high-impact hypersomnolence research, furthering a shared dedication to supporting patient-centered research that will improve the lives of those with idiopathic hypersomnia and related sleep disorders.

Congratulations to our 2026 Strategic Research Grant recipient!

Biomarkers Predictive of Treatment Responses in Narcolepsy and Idiopathic Hypersomnia: A PSG-MSLT Big Data Approach

Narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia are disabling conditions with limited evidence guiding treatment. Using de-identified polysomnography (PSG)/Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) data and clinical notes from over 900 patients, we will measure treatment effectiveness and possible treatment predictors. We hypothesize novel MSLT metrics based on quantitative electroencephalogram (EEG) and wake/sleep state hypnodensity analyses will predict treatment response, thus enabling faster, personalized therapy selection.

The goal of this project is to inform future treatment guidelines for central nervous system (CNS) disorder of hypersomnolence with evidence-based data on commonly used medications extracted from real-world clinical practice. Additionally, we hope to identify measurable features on standard sleep tests to predict how patients with narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia respond to treatment, turning trial-and-error prescribing into personalized care.

The AASM Foundation and the Hypersomnia Foundation have collaborated since 2022 to build a portfolio of innovative research on idiopathic hypersomnia. Past recipients of Strategic Research Grant funding through this collaboration include:
