Dr. Patil is the system director and section chief for sleep medicine at the University Hospitals of Cleveland and a clinical associate professor of medicine at Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. Patil has been active in numerous committees and leadership roles for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the Sleep and Respiratory Neurobiology Assembly and Board of Directors for the American Thoracic Society, and the American College of Chest Physicians. Within the AASM, Dr. Patil has served as a member of the Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders Section and as vice chair, the Payor Policy Review Committee, Fellowship Models Exploratory Committee, and as a task force member for revisions of ICSD-3. In addition, he has participated on committees with the AASM Foundation in reviewing scientific and fellowship support grants. In a leadership role he has been the chair of the AASM Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) for OSA Clinical Practice Guideline Task Force and the writing group chair and AASM representative who coordinated a multi-society response to the 2021 AHRQ Draft Technology Assessment on PAP for the treatment of OSA.

He has organized or spoken in numerous scientific symposia at international meetings related to sleep medicine and has participated in the development of important clinical guidelines in the sleep field. He is the author of more than 30 publications and has given invited lectures throughout the US. He is the former program director for the ACGME sleep medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. He has participated with the ABIM for both the sleep and pulmonary board exams. Dr. Patil has also been active in sleep medicine-related public policy at the state level as the past president of the Maryland Sleep Society
