Dr. Shelgikar is a Clinical Professor of Neurology at the University of Michigan, where she serves as program director for the sleep medicine fellowship. In medical education, Dr. Shelgikar is interested in competency-based education and assessment, along with curriculum design and evaluation. Clinically, she is particularly interested in multidisciplinary approaches to the care of patients with sleep-wake disorders. Her research work has included serving as co-investigator of a study on drowsy driving among older adults and performing polysomnography interpretation for two studies related to sleep-disordered breathing in pregnancy.

Dr. Shelgikar has served on the AASM Foundation Board of Directors since June 2018 and was AASM Foundation President from June 2020 – June 2023. She currently serves as the Immediate Past President and Secretary/Treasurer. She also serves on the AASM Board of Directors as Secretary/Treasurer and, previously, was Chair of the Sleep Medicine Fellowship Directors Council Steering Committee, Vice Chair of the Fellowship Models Exploratory Committee, and a member of the AASM Education Committee and Innovative Fellowship Model Implementation Presidential Committee.
